The 4 Productivity Rituals of Tony Schwartz (Video)

By | 2 comments

Here’s a short video of Tony Schwartz, founder of The Energy Project, talking about his four productivity rituals that make him effective and successful. Tony’s research and literature have influenced our work here at Asian Efficiency and we recommend that you check out some of his works. His books such as The Power of Full Engagement (audiobook / review) and Be Excellent at Anything (audiobook) are worthwhile reading.

To get an idea what his views are on personal productivity, check out his 3m video and our commentary below.

1. Keep a specific bedtime.
Sleep is one of the fundamental sources of energy for us. You can’t be productive when you’re physically tired. That’s why getting enough sleep is essential to being productive and that is why we developed Better Sleep to help you with that.

2. Prioritize one key task per day.
If there is one task you need to do in a day, which task would it be? We like to call this eating your frog where you start your day by working on your most important task. It’s a simple concept yet very powerful.

3. List new ideas and tasks.
Don’t pre-occupy yourself with trying to remember stuff. Your brain is horrible at it. Instead, capture and externalize your thoughts on a piece of paper or in your favorite task manager’s inbox. That way you free your mind to do other more important and resourceful things.

4. Question yourself when triggered.
When you’re triggered, ask yourself what you’re feeling this very moment and if you’re doing the right thing or not. When emotions take you over you don’t always make the right decisions. Out of all four rituals, this is the hardest one the master but it will ensure that you’re always in alignment with what you want to achieve.

If you liked this video, you’ll definitely like this talk he gave at the 99U conference. The video is about half an hour long but worthwhile watching too.

Getting your ideas out of your head and on paper is gold advice.

I’m a fairly creative guy myself and if I don’t get all those fancy ideas out of my head as soon as I have them, they keep my preoccupied all day long. Of course, I’m not productive when I am preoccupied.

What was a nice alternative to writing stuff down is to record audio snippets with your ideas, and organize them later. Or, how I like to do it, send the audio files to your virtual assistant, and he organizes and cleans them up in Evernote or a similar system.
