My Boat Analogy

I like to think of these tools as different types of boats.

ChatGPT is the reliable yacht. It’s the daily driver everyone knows. Comfortable, familiar, does a bit of everything. You can take it out on any water and feel pretty confident.

Claude is the speedboat. Smaller company, moves incredibly fast. When you need to get somewhere specific… fast… Claude cuts through the water while the yacht is still turning around.

And for what it’s worth, Google Gemini is the cruise ship. It has the most data and probably the best underlying tech, but it’s slow to turn. I use it for image work and anything tied to the Google ecosystem.

The point isn’t picking one winner. It’s knowing which boat to take out for which trip.

Where ChatGPT Wins

1. When you need an image.

Claude can’t generate images. Full stop. If you need a social media graphic, a quick mockup, or a product image cleaned up, ChatGPT with DALL-E is your only option between these two. I generate images in ChatGPT probably twice a week for presentations and social posts.

2. When you’re doing research.

ChatGPT’s built-in web browsing is solid. I use it for competitor analysis, looking up pricing, pulling recent news. You ask it a question and it goes out and finds current information. Claude has web search too, but ChatGPT does it more naturally.

3. When you want an obedient assistant.

This sounds weird, but ChatGPT does exactly what you tell it to do. If you say “write me a 500-word email about X,” you get that email. No pushback. No “have you considered a different approach?” Sometimes you just want the thing done.

4. When someone is brand new to AI.

ChatGPT is free to start, everyone has heard of it, and the interface is simple. When I run workshops, I always tell beginners: start with ChatGPT. Just try it for 30 minutes with some basic prompts. It’s the easiest on-ramp to understanding what AI can do.

The Go plan at $8/month is also the best budget tier of any AI tool right now. Unlimited messages on a solid model for less than a Chipotle burrito.

Where Claude Wins

1. When you’re writing code.

This isn’t close. Claude Opus 4.8 is the best coding model I’ve used. It leads SWE-bench at 80.9%, and in real work it shows. In January, I watched a guy named Jacob build his first working web app in about 30 minutes using Claude Code. A YouTube transcript summarizer. What would normally take a developer a full day of debugging happened while we watched. He went from “I don’t know how to code” to “I have a functioning app.”

Claude Code is something else entirely. It doesn’t just write code… it edits files across your whole project, runs tests, fixes errors, and keeps going. I set up Claude Bot on a Mac Mini over the weekend and this thing started improving its own database system. It flagged that my last interaction dates were pulling from another table, cleaned up the database, and built its own Airtable integration without me coding anything.

2. When you need to think through something complex.

Claude pushes back. If you give it a half-baked idea, it’ll say “here’s a better way.” ChatGPT will happily execute a bad plan without blinking. When I’m making architecture decisions or designing AI agents for clients, I want the tool that challenges my thinking, not the one that nods along.

3. When you’re working with long documents.

Claude’s 1M token context window is roughly four times what ChatGPT offers. I can feed it dozens of long documents and it actually processes them. For client work where I’m reviewing contracts, proposals, or research papers… Claude handles it without breaking a sweat.

4. When you want better writing.

ChatGPT writes fast. Claude writes better. The output is more nuanced, more natural. Claude will suggest a different structure or flag when your approach might not land. For anything longer than a quick email, I draft in Claude.

Here’s the thing most people miss. The best AI users don’t pick one tool and go all-in. They route work to the right tool for the job.

Just getting started with AI: Start with ChatGPT free. Then upgrade to ChatGPT Go ($8/month) when you hit the free limits. Don’t overcomplicate it.

Using AI for work daily: Get both at $20/month each. ChatGPT Plus for the all-in-one features. Claude Pro for the coding and thinking power. $40/month for both is the best deal in AI right now.

Building AI agents or coding: Claude Code is included from Claude Pro ($20/month) — that’s enough to get started. Claude Code changed how I work. If you’re running it most of the day, Max’s higher usage ceiling keeps you from hitting limits. Add ChatGPT Plus for research and images on the side.

Running a team or consulting practice: You probably need both at higher tiers. I use ChatGPT Pro and Claude Max 20x because the usage limits at lower tiers get in the way when you’re working with clients all day.

FAQ

Can I just use one and be fine?

Yes. If I could only keep one, I’d keep Claude because coding and reasoning matter more for my work. But most people would be better served by ChatGPT as their single tool since it covers more ground.
